Trust
to Recruit Underkeeper
| The Trust is currently in the process
of recruiting an Underkeeper to work alongside
the Projects fulltime keeper on the Boora Project.
This will also help with an expansion in the Captive
Breeding programme which will be used to support
satellite re-introduction projects around the
country. As the area actively managed for the
Project Continues to grow it is vital important
to make additional resources available. The project
is now actively managing over 400 acres directly
and indirectly to secure the future for the Wild
Irish Grey Partridge. |

Captive
Breeding Programme underway
| This year has seen a major expansion
in the Captive Breeding programme. This programme
will supply the Wild Grey Partridge to be used
in satellite projects around Ireland. While Last
years captive breeding programme comprised of
6 pairs, this years programme will have 16 Breeding
Pairs. 56 Juvenile birds were produced last year
as a result. Hopefull this year will see this
number increase. This expansion has been made
possible by the introduction of Wild Grey Partridges
from Estonia which have been successfully paired
off with Wild Irish Grey Partridges from Boora.
This has led to a mixture of pairs between Irish-Estonian
which should hopefully provide a shot in the arm
to the Irish Population. |

Spring
Count Results 2005
| The Spring Count provides an indication
of Population trends and dynamics and the prospects
the breeding season ahead giving an estimation
of the number of pairs on the ground. Following
the count the estimated population stands at 140
birds. This is a 150% increase over the 2004 Count
and represent some progress on securing the future.
This Count has shown evidence of the expansion
of the range and dispersal of Birds onto farmland
to the East of the main study area. |

Wild
Partridge from Estonia
| In February we successfully imported
21 Wild Grey Partirdges from Estonia. These were
caught up in conjuction with the Estonian Hunting
Organisation , Nargc and funded by the National
Parks and Wildlife Service. The aim of introducing
these birds is to give a genetic shot in the Arm
to the remaining Irish population as these birds
come from the same genetic strain. Post arrival
in Ireland these birds were kept in insolation
in order to acclimatize to there new surroundings
in Boora. We are glad to report that these birds
have now paired off successfully and shall form
a vital part of our captive breeding program this
year. |

Trust
Wins Heritage Council Grant
| In February the Trust was informed
that we were successful in obtaining a Grant from
the Heritage Council under the Heritage Grant
scheme. We were granted €7,000 towards the
removal of a large block of Foresty on the edge
of the Project Site which is blocking the movement
of birds between the main study area and surrounding
farmland. The funding shall also then be used
to create prime Partridge and Gamebird Habitat
through the creation of Semi Natural Grasslands
and nesting, feed and cover strips. |
